MantaWatch Internship Program

Established in honour of Guy Joseph, the MantaWatch Internship Program (MIP) is a strategic investment in young marine scientists and future marine leaders in emerging nations.

MIP is specifically targeted toward students who plan a career path in marine conservation, research or management, and who are willing to make a long-term commitment to preserving and protecting our oceans.

MIP provides hands-on opportunities in manta ray research and conservation, as well as related fields that may include monitoring or assessing threatened and endangered species and habitats. The program provides an array of diverse experiences including:

  • Scientific diving;
  • Experimental design;
  • Data collection and management;
  • Fisheries and conservation management;
  • Citizen science;
  • Science communication;
  • Outreach and education;
  • Non-profit operations; and
  • Public speaking.

Undergraduate students, postgraduate students, and recent graduates participating in MIP are provided with unique opportunities to:

  • Learn firsthand about manta rays and other threatened marine species and habitats;
  • Gain important, practical job skills in the conservation field, while assisting MantaWatch and our partners to meet conservation program goals;
  • Help preserve and protect manta rays and other threatened species and habitats by working with personnel from local government agencies, NGOs, and other partners to address important conservation issues;
  • Meet and network with conservationists, researchers, agency personnel, marine tourism operators and other interns;
  • Become sources of information, mentors and Manta Ambassadors for others interested in marine conservation issues;
  • Obtain college credit (if approved by an accredited university).

Each year, MIP awards a small number of fully funded scholarships to exceptional students enrolling in the program. These scholarship are awarded via the Guy Joseph MantaWatch Award, in partnership with Guy’s Trust.
